Emergency Stop

Office TeleREMOTE Emergency Stop

The Office TeleREMOTE is equipped with an emergency stop button. On activation, any remote machine on the same network and in REMOTE mode shuts down immediately.

Remote Machine Emergency Stop

All remote machines with cabs have at least two emergency stops. One emergency stop in the cab and one emergency stop strip on the feed. The location of emergency stops varies between machine models. It is important to read the relevant safety manual for the different remote machines that are controlled from the Office TeleREMOTE. Make sure that all personnel working near remote machines are aware of the location of the emergency stops.

Firefighting Equipment

Fire Prevention Readiness

Fire prevention readiness means that personnel know how to use the fire extinguisher and the automatic fire suppression system before they operate or work on the machine.

It is important to do the following before you operate or work on the machine:

  • Read the instructions and know the location, function, and use of fire extinguishers and activating devices.

  • Identify if the machine has a main power switch or a battery isolation switch or both. Be trained on how to turn the switches off in the case of fire.

  • Identify if the machine has a fuel supply. Be trained on how to close the fuel supply in case of fire.

Office TeleREMOTE Firefighting Equipment

The customer must make sure that both the location of, and area around the Office TeleREMOTE is properly equipped with firefighting equipment.

The customer must be aware of, and meet the firefighting requirements set in place by local regulations.

Remote Machine Firefighting Equipment

Remote machines are equipped with handheld fire extinguishers inside the cab. They are designed for fires of class A-B-C. Other extinguishers are fitted elsewhere depending on the model of machine. To find out where the other extinguishers are located, refer to the documentation supplied with the remote machine.

For information about the fire extinguishers that are fitted to a remote machine, refer to the documentation supplied with the machine.

Fire Extinguishers

The handheld fire extinguishers are optional.

NOTE

The machine is equipped with designated locations for fire extinguishers. The owner of the machine is responsible for equipping the machine with approved fire extinguishers.

NOTE

Epiroc recommends using powder extinguishers (Class A, B, C) of at least 6 kg (13.23 lb) of efficiency class 43A 233B C or higher. The fire extinguishers must be approved according to local laws and regulations.

NOTE

A fire extinguisher can only be used once. After a fire extinguisher has been used, it must be replaced with a new fire extinguisher or an authorized service technician must recharge it. It does not matter how much or how little extinguishant that is used. The fire extinguisher that has been used must be handled according to local laws and regulations. It is important to follow the instructions on the fire extinguisher always.

NOTE

A fire extinguisher whose gauge indicator is outside of the green zone or whose seal is broken must be replaced with a new fire extinguisher. Thus, it is important to check so that the gauge indicator is in the green zone and that the seal is intact regularly.

Example of a Fire Extinguisher with the Gauge Indicator in the Green Zone

Different types of fires require different types of extinguishants, which is the reason why handheld fire extinguishers are divided into different fire classes.

Classification of Fire Extinguishers

Fire Class

Efficiency Class

Extinguishant

Type of Fire

A

5–55

  • Powder

  • Foam

  • Water

Fires of common solid materials such as:

  • Wood

  • Paper

  • Textiles

  • Some plastics

These solid materials burn with flames and glow like most of the interior materials.

B

21–233

  • Powder

  • Foam

  • Carbon dioxide

Fires of common fluids such as:

  • Gasoline

  • Oil

  • Paint

  • Some plastics

  • Synthetic materials

  • Solid materials which can transform into liquid form.

C

N/A

  • Powder

Fires of common gases.

D

N/A

  • Special powder

Fires of metals and metal alloys.

F (EU) / K (US)

N/A

  • Special liquid

Fires of cooking oil and cooking fat.

The machine is equipped with designated locations for the fire extinguishers. It is important to put only portable fire extinguishers that are approved and in accordance with local laws and regulations at the designated locations. For example, in the EU, the fire extinguishers must be approved according to the European standard EN 3. It is preferable to equip the machine with a fire extinguisher of a high efficiency class. For example, 43A 233B C or higher. The efficiency class is a measurement of how large fire that can be extinguished. 43A 233B C means that the fire extinguisher has a capacity to extinguish a class A fire of size 43, a class B fire of size 233, or a class C fire. The higher the number of the efficiency class, the larger the fire can be extinguished.

Powder extinguishers are the most common extinguishers that are used. They are easy to use and can be used on most fires. The powder extinguishant is a collection of salt. The powder is finely ground so that it can penetrate into all spaces. The powder does not conduct electricity. Powder extinguishers range in size 5–7 m (16.40–22.97 ft) and the wind conditions affect the performance. Powder extinguishers are available in the following mass sizes:

  • 2 kg (4.41 lb)

  • 4 kg (8.82 lb)

  • 6 kg (13.23 lb)

  • 9 kg (19.84 lb)

  • 12 kg (26.46 lb)

The duration of operation varies 10–15 seconds for one powder extinguisher of 2 kg (4.41 lb) to 25–30 seconds for one powder extinguisher of 12 kg (26.46 lb). A powder extinguisher can work for up to 15 years if it is placed at a dry location and checked regularly, at least once a year.

Fire in Remote Machine

If a remote rig is equipped with an automatic fire suppression system, it can be activated from the Office TeleREMOTE control panel. If the operator suspects that a remote machine is on fire, slide the red fire-system button cover to one side and press in the button. After 3 seconds, the automatic fire suppression system in the remote machine activates. During the 3-second interval, the Office TeleREMOTE operator is presented with the option to cancel the automatic fire suppression system activation.

NOTE

If controlling multiple rigs, make sure that the correct rig is allocated before activating the automatic fire suppression system.

On observing flames or smoke, the operator must press the red fire-system button. The operator must not wait for the system to activate automatically.

Automatic Fire Suppression System

The fire suppression system is optional equipment.

The machine can be equipped with an automatic fire suppression system that can be activated both manually and automatically. The system uses powder, liquid, or gas (such as carbon dioxide) as a suppression medium. When the system is activated, pressure is created in the tanks and the extinguishant is ejected through nozzles to suppress the fire. The emergency stop is automatically activated if the automatic fire suppression system is triggered.

An authorized service company must inspect the automatic fire suppression system when instructed to do so during a maintenance interval. Contact the Epiroc local customer center for information regarding authorized service companies.

If the machine has been modified, an authorized service company must inspect the automatic fire suppression system.

NOTE

Disable the automatic fire suppression system when steam-cleaning, hi-pressure washing, welding, battery charging and starting with auxiliary battery.

  • The fire fighting system suppresses fire over the following areas:

  • Over and around the engine

  • Over and around the fuel tank

Large quantities of flammable materials cannot be suppressed by the automatic fire suppression system. Use other methods to suppress residual fires.
