Installing the Undercarriage Track Chain

Precondition

  • The machine is off.

  • The controls are in the OFF or neutral position.

  1. 1.
    Attach the safety locks and tags from the machine in accordance with local regulations.

    NOTE

    Refer to Safety Locks and Tags Minimum Requirements in the Maintenance manual.

  2. 2.
    Make sure the machine is in a zero-energy state.
  3. 3.

    WARNING

    Crushing Hazard

    Can cause personal injury.

    1. Lifting equipment must be adequately sized, have the correct lifting capacity, and be in good condition.

    2. Be careful when you lift heavy components.

    Use a forklift to put the Track Chain Assembly below the cab side track frame with one end at the front idler (Figure 5).

    NOTE

    Pay attention to the correct position and direction of the track segments and grouser shoes. Make sure that the ends of Track Chain Assembly are at the front idler.

  4. 4.

    WARNING

    Crushing Hazard

    Can cause personal injury.

    1. Lifting equipment must be adequately sized, have the correct lifting capacity, and be in good condition.

    2. Be careful when you lift heavy components.

    Attach the opposite end of the Track Chain Assembly to the crane with an approved lifting device.
  5. 5.

    WARNING

    Pinch Points

    Avoid pinch points while extending the cylinder.

    1. Be careful with the pinch points created by the two mounting surfaces.

    Pull the end of the track chain over the top of the track frame and towards the other end of the track chain. Make sure that the track and sprocket align correctly (Figure 6).

    Use a ratchet hoist to pull the ends of the Track Chain Assembly together.
  7. 7.
    Apply grease to the master pin and pin bores of the ends of the track at the master links.
  8. 8.
    Insert the master pin (Figure 6, item E) with seals (items C and D) and spacers (items B) into the master links on the track chain.

    NOTE

    The use of a sledgehammer or hydraulic press tool may be required to install the master pin.

  9. 9.
    Install the cap screws (item A) onto the master pin (item E).
  10. 10.
    Torque the cap screws to 126 Newton meters (93 foot-pounds) dry.
  11. 11.
    Remove the ratchet hoist from the Track Chain Assembly.
  12. 12.
    Tension the undercarriage track chain.

    NOTE

    Refer to Undercarriage Track Chain Tension and Inspection.

  13. 13.

    WARNING

    Energized Machine

    Can cause serious injury.

    1. The machine must be fully energized and the engine must be switched on to complete this procedure.

    2. Be careful around moving parts and pinch points.

    Inform the supervisor, lead hand, and all other persons concerned of the intent to restart the machine for testing purposes.

    NOTE

    Make sure that all personnel and bystanders are clear of the machine before you start the machine.

  14. 14.
    Remove the safety locks and tags from the machine in accordance with the site-specific procedures.

    NOTE

    Refer to Safety Locks and Tags Minimum Requirements in the Maintenance Manual.

  15. 15.
    Start the machine.
  16. 16.
    Raise the machine until there is sufficient clearance to remove the stands.
  17. 17.
    Remove the stands from below the machine.
  18. 18.
    Lower the machine to the ground.
  19. 19.
    Stow the jacks.
  20. 20.
    Stop the machine.
  21. 21.
    Repeat steps 1 through 19 to install the non-cab side track chain.
