Removing the Undercarriage Track Chain

Removing the Undercarriage Track Chain

  1. 1.
Park the machine on a dry, level surface.
  2. 2.

    DANGER

    Electrocution Hazard

Operating near or contacting a power line with any part of the machine can cause electrocution, causing death.

    1. Do not raise or lower the tower or operate the machine near electric power lines.

    2. Keep at least 3 meters (10 feet) away from power lines.

    3. If there appears any danger of wind or other obstruction decreasing the distance, do not drill in that area.

Lower the tower to the horizontal position.
  3. 3.
Raise the machine with the leveling jacks until there is sufficient clearance between the ground and the track chains for the removal procedure.
  4. 4.
Turn each undercarriage to position the track chain master pin (Figure 1, item A) over the front idler sprocket.

    NOTE

The master pin has a pin hole on the face.

  5. 5.
Put a support stand below the non-drill end and drill end of the main-frame.
  6. 6.
Lower the machine onto the stands.
  7. 7.
    Stow the leveling jack cylinders.
  8. 8.
Put all of the controls in the OFF or neutral position.
  9. 9.
    Stop the machine.
  10. 10.
Attach safety locks and tags to the machine in accordance with the site-specific procedures.

    NOTE

Refer to Safety Locks and Tags Minimum Requirements in the Maintenance manual.

  11. 11.
Make sure that the machine is in a zero-energy state.
  12. 12.

    NOTICE

    Pressurized Cleaning

Pressurized cleaning with compressed air, water jets, or steam cleaning methods can cause personal injury.

    1. Put on applicable personnel protective clothing to protect eyes and uncovered parts of the body.

    2. Maximum air pressure at the nozzle must be less than 207 kPa (30 psi) for cleaning purposes.

Clean the cab side Undercarriage Assembly.
  13. 13.

    CAUTION

    Environmental Contaminant

Oil is an environmental contaminant and must be discarded correctly.

    1. Do not let the used oil drain onto the ground.

    2. Discard the used oil in accordance with local environmental regulations.

Put a container below the track tension ports (Figure 2, items A and B).

    WARNING

    Stored Energy

Track components have the presence of stored energy. This stored energy can cause severe injury or death

    1. A hand or other body part near the point of operation during cycling can result in severe injury.

    2. Stay out of the line of fire.

Release the tension in the undercarriage.

    NOTE

Refer to Examine the Track Tension in the Maintenance Manual.

  15. 15.
Remove the cap screws (Figure 3, item A) and nuts (item D) from three track grousers (item B) from the track chain (item C), one at the master link grouser, and one on either side of the master link. Discard the cap screws and nuts.

    WARNING

    Crushing Hazard

    Can cause personal injury.

    1. Lifting equipment must be adequately sized, have the correct lifting capacity, and be in good condition.

    2. Be careful when you lift heavy components.

Attach a ratchet hoist to the ends of the track chain at the master link to support the chain during the removal of the master pin.
  17. 17.
Remove the cotter pin (Figure 4, item B) from the master pin (item A) that is located on the inside of the tracks.

  18. 18.
Use a punch drive and sledgehammer to remove the master pin from the track chain.

    NOTE

A hydraulic press may be required to remove the master pin.

  19. 19.
Slowly release the ratchet hoist from the track chain and lay the end of the track chain onto the ground in front of the track frame.
  20. 20.

    WARNING

    Crushing Hazard

    Can cause personal injury.

    1. Lifting equipment must be adequately sized, have the correct lifting capacity, and be in good condition.

    2. Be careful when you lift heavy components.

Attach the end of the track chain to the forklift with an approved lifting device.

    NOTE

The forklift is only used to pull the track chain out from below the machine.

  21. 21.

    WARNING

    Energized Machine

    Can cause serious injury.

    1. The machine must be fully energized and the engine must be switched on to complete this procedure.

    2. Be careful around moving parts and pinch points.

Inform the supervisor, lead hand, and all other parties concerned, of the intent to restart the machine for testing purposes.

    NOTE

The supervisor and lead hand must make sure all personnel and bystanders are clear of the machine before start-up.

  22. 22.
Remove the safety locks and tags from the machine in accordance with local regulations.

    NOTE

Refer to Safety Locks and Tags Minimum Requirements in the Maintenance manual.

  23. 23.
    Start the machine.
  24. 24.

    WARNING

    Crushing Hazard

    Can cause personal injury

    1. Be careful when you lift or lower heavy components.

    2. Use tag lines when required.

    3. Do not stand in the working area of the work floor crane when it is operating with an overhead load.

    4. Keep the load as close to the ground as possible.

Use the machine controls to turn the undercarriage towards the non-drill end. At the same time, pull the track away from the track frame.
  25. 25.
Put all of the controls in the OFF or neutral position.
  26. 26.
    Stop the machine.
